Belle Mead Co-Op

Your Trusted Local Resource for Home, Farm, and Landscape

Belle Mead Co-Op has been part of Hillsborough since 1920, and the story of how it got here is worth knowing. What started as a hay press powered by horses in the cellar of a large barn evolved over a century into a full-service destination for homeowners, gardeners, farmers, and pet owners. The original founders incorporated the Co-Op more than 100 years ago, and descendants of those founding families are still part of the business today. That kind of continuity is rare, and it shows in how the place operates.

Cortney and Chris have been managing the Co-Op for years, and their familiarity with both the business and the customers is part of what makes it work. They know the regulars, they know the inventory, and they know when someone asking about perennials actually needs to hear about soil conditions first. The staff overall carries that same depth. Questions get real answers here, not a shrug and a pointed finger. When you’re picking up bags of mulch or other supplies, the crew helps load your car so you’re not wrestling with it alone.

The selection reflects over a century of paying attention to what people actually need. Bulk and bagged landscape materials, mulch, soil, and stone cover the big outdoor projects. The nursery carries local perennials and native plants, including wildflowers, shrubs, and drought-tolerant varieties that support local wildlife and thrive with minimal maintenance. Their greenhouse stocks seasonal vegetable starts like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and squash, along with fresh culinary herbs and organic and heirloom varieties for raised beds and container gardens.

There’s a full water gardening department and a feed store that covers everything from hamsters to horses. They source hay, straw, and farm-fresh eggs directly from local farmers, carry pet food alongside the farm essentials, and fill propane on site.

The property itself has changed with the times. The historic barn that once pressed hay into bales for railroad transport now runs on 84 solar panels. The land expanded in the late 1990s when the Co-Op purchased additional acreage to grow its landscape operation. What has not changed is the standard. Customers who have been coming here for two decades say the same things newcomers say: good quality, fair prices, and people who know what they are talking about.
